Web development provides a foundational environment for creating and maintaining websites and web applications in educational and professional settings. Widely used to build interactive and dynamic online content, web development encompasses front-end technologies, back-end programming, and integration with databases and APIs. A web development certification allows students and job seekers to demonstrate their skills in designing, coding, and managing web projects and supports their academic success and long-term career readiness.
A Web Developer certification measures practical skills in building and managing websites with no prerequisites. It is well suited for students and adult learners who want to validate their understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as their ability to integrate these technologies to create responsive, interactive, and functional web applications.
The Tosa Web Developer certification exam evaluates four key domains:
The candidate should know the basic principles and rules of CSS, be able to apply a style rule to an element using different methods, and import CSS styles from another style sheet. They should also be able to position elements on a page, manage spacing, element size, and text, and read a CSS file written by another developer to correctly use CSS rules within an HTML file.
The candidate should understand the basic principles of HTML, be able to use different HTML elements with their attributes, and choose the most relevant elements to meet specific needs. They should also be able to use advanced HTML elements such as tables and forms.
The candidate should know the main characteristics and specificities of JavaScript, understand its basic functionalities and syntax, and be able to create and manipulate primitive objects, built-in objects, or more complex custom objects. They should also understand and manipulate object properties, as well as listen to, read, and modify the DOM (Document Object Model).
The candidate should be able to integrate HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code together, write CSS for display customization, and write dynamic JavaScript for a web page. They should be able to solve bugs within complex code written by another developer and understand the technical documentation of external libraries.
The Tosa certification for Web Developer lasts one hour and a half and uses a 35-question adaptive exam drawn from a pool of more than 100 items, including multiple-choice, interactive, and live coding tasks. The test evaluates a candidate’s skills and knowledge in the four domains presented above and selects questions from five difficulty levels depending on the abilities of the test taker.
Tosa certification exams are not open book. The certification tests must be taken in a secure environment and are proctored at all times in accordance with the Tosa Exam Policy. Adaptive testing produces a unique sequence of items for each candidate, reducing the risk of cheating and item memorization. In-person and remote proctoring options are available.
The certification is valid for 3 years. Earners may retest anytime to improve their score or to maintain their certification. There is a minimum 24-hour waiting period between two retakes. Candidates receive a new version of the test with each attempt.
The result of the exam is a numeric score between 1 and 1000 points associated to a proficiency level. It is calculated using a pattern-scoring model (IRT). The minimum score required to earn the certification is 551. Certification earners receive a Tosa certification diploma that indicates the test date, the score, and the proficiency level achieved. It contains a unique authentication code for online verification. Earners with a score of 551 and above are also eligible to receive a Credly digital badge.
