Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel VBA, and Power BI) are foundational tools for productivity in schools and workplaces across the United States. Widely used in academic institutions and professional environments, Microsoft Office remains a standard for creating documents, analyzing data, delivering presentations, professional communication through Outlook, data visualization and business intelligence with Power BI, and workflow automation using VBA. A Microsoft Outlook certification allows students and job seekers to demonstrate their proficiency in an email and calendar application and supports their academic success and long-term career readiness.
Tosa certification for Microsoft Outlook measures practical proficiency with no prerequisites. It is well suited for students and adult learners who want to validate their ability to manage professional email communication, calendars, and collaboration tools effectively.
The Tosa Microsoft Outlook certification exam evaluates four key domains:
In this domain, candidates are tested on their knowledge of the Outlook interface (ribbon, navigation pane, folders, inbox items), the customization of each item, and the use of the Out of Office Assistant and the print options manager. This is also where you will find questions about data management, archiving and backup, and creating and customizing accounts.
The questions in this domain assess candidates on composing and sending email messages, e-mail formatting, adding different types of attachments, and using Outlook features (cc: and bcc: features, adding a signature, creating delivering and reading receipts, creating rules and alerts). This domain also includes the use of rules and alerts, message management, and searching for information.
This domain tests the candidate’s ability to manage an Outlook calendar and tasks (creating appointments and meetings with different options such as priority, recurrence, and reminders; receiving and responding to invitations; creating tasks; customizing the display; and printing a calendar), as well as their ability to manage delegation and sharing. Within advanced levels, this domain also includes questions on task management (task creation, display, customization).
The domain covers Outlook contacts maintenance: adding new contacts, creating distribution lists that can be shared and distributed in different formats, displaying contacts in various ways, and grouping them by criteria.
The Tosa certification for Microsoft Outlook lasts one hour and uses a 20-question adaptive exam drawn from a pool of more than 150 items, including multiple-choice, interactive, and live in-application tasks. The test evaluates a candidate’s skills and knowledge in the four domains presented above and selects questions from five difficulty levels depending on the abilities of the test taker.
Tosa certification exams are not open book. The certification tests must be taken in a secure environment and are proctored at all times in accordance with the Tosa Exam Policy. Adaptive testing produces a unique sequence of items for each candidate, reducing the risk of cheating and item memorization. In-person and remote proctoring options are available.
The certification is valid for 3 years. Earners may retest anytime to improve their score or to maintain their certification. There is a minimum 24-hour waiting period between two retakes. Candidates receive a new version of the test with each attempt.
The result of the exam is a numeric score between 1 and 1000 points associated to a proficiency level. It is calculated using a pattern-scoring model (IRT). The minimum score required to earn the certification is 351. Certification earners receive a Tosa certification diploma that indicates the test date, the score, and the proficiency level achieved. It contains a unique authentication code for online verification. Earners with a score of 551 and above are also eligible to receive a Credly digital badge.
